I note your response to the question of...Hi Vishal,
I note your response to the question of other industries that we can learn from, you mention aerospace and car manufacturing. However, have you come across a more detail or comprehensive study which compares construction with other sectors? Throughout the last century there were many references to the lessons that industry might teach architecture about procurement; anything from Corb's profiling of ship-building and cars in Towards a New Architecture, or Rayner Banham's reference to how it took architecture nearly 40's years to adopt air conditioning technology after it was being widely used in factories, to the Latham and Egan UK construction industry reviews in the 1990's which referred to how Japanese car manufacturers caught up with (and surpassed in some cases) established US companies in terms of efficiency and quality. However, none of these truly compare and contrast or even map them against each other in outline. The best, albeit very short, comparison I've come across was a comment by an Australian architect- Michael Trudgeon, who’s practice follows a business model closer to the manufacturing industries described above. He carried out a study in 1993 which highlighted the difference between building and car design in terms of design-time- thinking; I quote; "A totally new Japanese car requires 1.7 million hours of research and development time from blank sheet of paper to the first customer delivery. With an average run of one million cars, the design cost amortized across the production run comes in at only $435 per car, but each car has the benefit of 1.7 million hours of design thought. By comparison a new office building, costing $50 million with design consultancy fees running at 5 percent of build cost, has the benefit of only 10,000 hours of design thought. The worst case of all is a three-bed-roomed architect-designed family home, with fees running at 11 percent of cost. This will have only 1,750 hours of design thought". From Trudgeon, M. Architecture as an anti-technological virus: the work of Michael Trudgeon. World Architecture, Issue 23, May 1993. P42. Interesting- but we need better research!Kirkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15314809308318757772noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2295039436385510619.post-55226321257301525932013-12-01T05:24:06.712-08:002013-12-01T05:24:06.712-08:00Here is another interesting reply to Randy's q...Here is another interesting reply to Randy's question - Why is the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry the last to discover – and utilize – data, for their benefit?”

http://theemergingarchitect.com/2013/11/30/the-last-to-discover-a-response/"

Vishal Porwalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14467395468288359550noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2295039436385510619.post-23689990418527502072013-07-22T01:05:59.445-07:002013-07-22T01:05:59.445-07:00Updates - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnew...Updates - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/china/10193630/Construction-of-worlds-tallest-building-begins-in-China.htmlVishal Porwalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14467395468288359550noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2295039436385510619.post-63571197716253240462013-05-20T04:12:00.556-07:002013-05-20T04:12:00.556-07:00As the collapse of such mega building would kill t...As the collapse of such mega building would kill ten thousands of occupants, I guess the Skycity should be formally banned by the authorities.

Hydraulic Installation Kits

Thanks
Bruce Hammerson.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13342846903877358192noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2295039436385510619.post-22277111491154734682013-04-19T20:46:23.761-07:002013-04-19T20:46:23.761-07:00Have used about half of these. I was thinking of a hands on "sandbox" where you can use i.e. lego or plasticine to let the participants in planning meetings show what they want to do and to get a shared idea of how the work looks like (the low budged BIM 3D solution ;). That would assist to help to improve the process of first run studies and to talk about different options.

Did someone do have experience with playfulness in construction planning scenarios or in Last Planner teams?

I will try the "sandbox" and let you know. Looking forward to share some experiences.
Greetings
TobiasTobias Gullerhttp://www.wolff-mueller.denoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2295039436385510619.post-52412702332339575342011-11-25T06:09:41.186-08:002011-11-25T06:09:41.186-08:00That was indeed impressive! Now he explores stats in a way he has never done before - using augmented reality animation. In this spectacular section of 'The Joy of Stats' he tells the story of the world in 200 countries over 200 years using 120,000 numbers - in just four minutes. Plotting life expectancy against income for every country since 1810, Hans shows how the world we live in is radically different from the world most of us imagine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbkSRLYSojoVishal Porwalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14467395468288359550noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2295039436385510619.post-65086058156348701042010-12-28T21:35:34.844-08:002010-12-28T21:35:34.844-08:00A relevant article by Matt Horvat of Lean Project ...A relevant article by Matt Horvat of Lean Project Consulting - http://bit.ly/gT8bQmVishal Porwalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14467395468288359550noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2295039436385510619.post-57160877328070505022010-12-27T06:18:45.254-08:002010-12-27T06:18:45.254-08:00Here is a link to the news about Expo Broad Pavili...Here is a link to the news about Expo Broad Pavilion Construction in China Daily - http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/cndy/2010-03/15/content_9588476.htmVishal Porwalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14467395468288359550noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2295039436385510619.post-9765876422258493072010-12-27T04:42:42.752-08:002010-12-27T04:42:42.752-08:00From LinkedIn, I also got hold of another interest...From LinkedIn, I also got hold of another interesting video of similar kind - "Timelapse Construction Video of 2010 Shanghai World Expo Broad Pavilion"

http://vimeo.com/13727829Vishal Porwalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14467395468288359550noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2295039436385510619.post-14867571032055625492010-12-27T04:42:11.011-08:002010-12-27T04:42:11.011-08:00There is an interesting discussion going on about ...There is an interesting discussion going on about the same building on LinkedIn's - Lean Construction Network Group - http://tinyurl.com/2fe3k3uVishal Porwalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14467395468288359550noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2295039436385510619.post-30497130966709419242010-12-18T06:19:04.509-08:002010-12-18T06:19:04.509-08:00Please read Hal's thoughts on Toyota Productio...Please read Hal's thoughts on Toyota Production System - http://www.reformingprojectmanagement.com/2010/02/10/1060/

He also tries to emphasize the importance of 'planning in detail as you get near execution' thats the core of Last Planner System too.Vishal Porwalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14467395468288359550noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2295039436385510619.post-89566555848557212302010-12-14T01:10:14.305-08:002010-12-14T01:10:14.305-08:00Director of BIM, Chris Tisdel at The Texas Facilit...Director of BIM, Chris Tisdel at The Texas Facilities Commission (TFC) about BIM and TFC.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJDeFT5em7MVishal Porwalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14467395468288359550noreply@blogger.com
